Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take for me to feel better?

The length of time required for you to feel better varies widely and largely depend on the challenge(s) that brought you to seek counseling. Your time here may be brief, brief therapy on average is considered to be 6-10 sessions, or a more extended time. Ultimately, the time it takes is determined by you and the therapist. It is not uncommon for people to decide to continue seeing a therapist for counsel and support, even after they are “better.” Many people see it as “preventive care.”

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? Solution Focused Therapy? and Family SystemsTherapy?
Each therapist uses different methods to help provide their clients with the tools needed to facilitate change. Here are different methods used by the therapists. Check your therapists profile to see which method(s) they use.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is goal orientated and based on the idea that our thoughts influence our feelings and behaviors. The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviors that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of disorders, including depression and anxiety.
Solution-Focused Therapy focuses on what clients would like to achieve through therapy rather than on their troubles or mental health issues. The therapist will help the client envision a desirable future, and then map out the small and large changes necessary for the client to undergo to realize their vision. The therapist will seize on any successes the client experiences, to encourage them to build on their strengths rather than dwell on their problems or limitations.
Family Systems Therapy views problems within the family as the result not of particular members’ behaviors, but of the family’s group dynamic. The family is seen as a complex system having its own language, roles, rules, beliefs, needs and patterns. The therapist helps each individual member understand how their childhood family operated, their role in that system, and how that experience has shaped their role in their current family.

I see certain therapists offer Christian Counseling. What is Christian Counseling?
Christian Counseling uses psychological techniques, research &theories, filtered through the Holy Bible and applied according to a Christian worldview, to help clients gain the knowledge and skills to cope with life’s difficult challenges. Scriptures are used to help provide structure and support and “homework” may be given to help keep clients move forward on their journey towards healing.

How often will I meet with my therapist?
The frequency in which you and your therapist meet all depends on the your needs. However, this is a decision that you and your therapist will make together. In the beginning of your therapy, you may need to meet with your therapist more frequently. As you experience some relief or success, it is not unusual to consult with your therapist and decide to meet less frequently. It is also not unusual to meet more that once within a week if you are in a crisis. All of this can be talked about in the session.

Do you take insurance?
We might! Ask if the therapist you would like to see is on your insurance panel as a provider. In the event your therapist is not an in-network provider on your insurance plan, a “super bill” can be provided to you so that you can file a claim with your insurance company. Also, know that many people have out-of-network benefits. Please check your benefits, you may be pleasantly surprised.
Please note that insurance companies will not pay for your session(s) without knowing what they are paying for. That is why they require us to give you a diagnosis. The diagnosis tells them, in short, why you are coming to counseling. The diagnosis becomes part of your medical record.
